We are proud to present Japan’s KAZUO IMAI / 今井和雄 in his first ever and only scheduled U.S. performance. Imai is a world renowned master improviser who has been creating music for over 40 years. He got his start in the early 1970’s studying with two of the towering figures of 20th century Japanese music- MASAYUKI TAKAYANAGI and TAKEHISA KOSUGI. He has performed with such legendary improvising groups as the TAJ MAHAL TRAVELLERS and the EAST BIONIC SYMPHONIA. He is a also a founding member of MARGINAL CONSORT who will make their West Coast premier on June 3rd.

This evening Imai-san will perform an improvised set of SOLO ELECTRIC GUITAR. His approach is known for it’s ferocity and intense energy. As legend has it, he is the only person to ever complete Masayuki Takayanagi’s demanding course of guitar studies. Imai’s guitar language is expansive- he has performed with the likes of Han Bennink, Barre Phillips and Keiji Haino.

DOO-DOOETTES will reunite and make an extremely rare live performance for the first time since 2012!! Featuring DENNIS DUCK, FREDRIK NILSEN and TOM RECCHION – Doo-Dooettes are founders of the legendary L.A.F.M.S. (Los Angeles Free Music Society)- and can be counted as among the most important improvisational / experimental groups to emerge in the 1970’s. They have had a profound influence in the worlds of experimental and improvised music and in particular in Japan- where their work was championed early on throughout the vibrant underground music and arts scene.
